Footage released after the court case shows the moment the victim was attacked as he challenged a man for cycling on a pavement.
Video: Andrew Young died in hospital after being punched in the street
A man who landed a single
punch that lead to the death of a stranger after an argument about
cycling on the pavement has been jailed.
Lewis Gill, 20, who pleaded guilty, was given a four-year sentence at
Salisbury Crown Court after his attack caused the death from a head
injury of 40-year-old Andrew Young. Lewis Gill pleaded guilty to the attack
The incident, which was caught on CCTV, happened outside the Tesco
Metro store in Charminster Road, Bournemouth, on November 6, 2013.
In the footage Mr Young speaks to an acquaintance of Gill's about his
cycling and as the cyclist seen walking away, Gill moves in to punch him
and he falls backwards onto the road.
The court heard evidence that Gill's punch caused Mr Young to sustain
the fatal injury when he fell. He died the next day at Southampton
hospital.
Gill, from Sutton, Surrey, was given a further six months' imprisonment
for other offences committed elsewhere, bringing his sentence to a
total of four and a half years in jail.
Mr Young's mother, Pamela, told the Dorset Daily Echo that her son had Asperger's syndrome which affected his social skills.
She said: "He was very precise and particular because of his Asperger's
and he wouldn't have liked seeing someone riding a bicycle on the
pavement because it was dangerous." The conversation that lead up to the punch is caught on CCTV
She said she wished that the "awful man" had pleaded not guilty so could have faced a longer sentence after a trial.
Detective Inspector Marcus Hester, of Dorset Police's Major Crime Team,
said: "This was a violent attack on an innocent man which had a tragic
outcome.
"This case shows that violence does not resolve anything and can have far reaching consequences not imagined at the time."
He said the court had "issued a sentence deemed appropriate and in accordance with the evidence put to them".
"Criminal behaviour such as this will not be tolerated and we are committed to bringing offenders to justice."
